Our Experience and Approach

Richways Auto School

How Long Has the Business Been Operating?

Richways Auto School has been operating in Worcester for over 10 years. We are well established and known throughout Worcester and the surrounding areas, serving local families for generations. We are one of the most popular driving schools to attend if you live in Worcester, known for our flexible hours (you will not wait 3+ weeks to book driving lessons), our fair prices, and, most importantly, our amazing, patient instructors who care about your safety, your knowledge, and getting you licensed as quickly and safely as possible. We are also known for our Saturday weekend road test.

Instructor Qualifications

Our instructors' qualifications are very important to the safety of our students. Before we hire a new instructor, they must have a clean record in driving and in life, and they must be over 21 years old. If they meet those requirements, they complete a 65-hour Driving Instructor Training Course, broken into three parts:

  • 45 hours in the classroom: learning the basics, ethics, and rules of teaching on the road. This includes the importance of clear, patient communication when the student or instructor is under pressure, the ability to explain the same thing in three different ways, and good judgment around safety on the road.
  • 10 hours of on-road observation: watching another instructor teach.
  • 10 hours of teaching while being observed: teaching while being observed by a seasoned instructor.

Once that is complete, they apply for the Driving Instructor exam with the RMV, where they must answer 100 questions and pass with a 90%. After passing, they receive their driving instructor license.

Massachusetts-Specific Experience

Richways Auto School has served Massachusetts drivers for over 10 years, starting in Worcester and now with a second location in Dracut. Every instructor is licensed by the Massachusetts RMV, which means passing the state's 100-question instructor exam with a 90% or higher. We teach the state's requirements, including the Junior Operator License rules and the required Parent/Guardian Class. We also offer RMV road tests, including our popular Saturday weekend road test, so students can prepare and test with the same school.

What Distinguishes Our Training

Our training is more efficient and effective. We created simple 1-2 step processes for maneuvers like parallel parking and the straight back up, unlike many other schools that use 4-5 steps. We want to keep it simple so students can learn, train, remember, and never forget, just like riding a bike. Keeping it simple also lifts the pressure of the road test, so students can perform well under pressure and in front of an examiner. Our goal is to teach students to be safe drivers and to remove the fear, worry, and pressure that come with driving and getting your license. We do it with knowledge, care, and patience.

What Types of Students We Work With

We work with all kinds of students, from age 15½ and up. We teach people from many different backgrounds and language groups, and we have French and Swahili speaking instructors. We never shy away from a student who needs extra help. Our goal is to help every student who walks through our doors grow as a driver. If you are looking to get your license, we have got you covered.

Our Approach to Beginner Drivers

For beginner drivers who have never touched a car, our approach is about 12 hours behind the wheel, to prepare them to pass the road test. We start with the basics: car functions, blind spots, hand positioning, steering and turning, driving on the road while staying in the right lane, right of way, road symbols and signs, highway driving, lane switching, pedestrian safety, safety in heavy traffic, and how to fuel a car. Most importantly, we teach the maneuvers: the 3-point turn, parallel parking, and the straight back up. All of this is covered across 12 lessons so you can be safe and independent on the road.

Beginner Driver Lesson Breakdown

  • Lessons 1-2: car functions, hand positioning, turning, speed control, blind spots, and hand signals.
  • Lessons 3-5: driving and maneuvers, including road signs and pedestrian safety.
  • Lessons 6-8: highway driving, heavy traffic, lane switching, and continued maneuvers.
  • Lessons 9-10: continued driving with maneuvers.
  • Lessons 11-12: extra practice on any areas that still need work before test day.
